The credential

What CPC is, and why coders sit for it

CPC stands for Certified Professional Coder. It is credentialed by AAPC, and it is earned by passing AAPC's exam — a 100-mark paper with a minimum of 70 marks to pass. This program is built to get you to that standard.

A tested credential

CPC is not awarded for attendance. You sit AAPC's exam and you either reach the pass mark or you do not — which is exactly why it carries weight on a resume.

Built on the core code sets

The syllabus covers ICD, CPT and HCPCS together with anatomy and physiology, so you can read what the provider documented before you go looking for a code.

Program structure

Three months, in two phases

The program is deliberately split. Two months are spent learning the syllabus. The third month is spent proving you can apply it under exam conditions.

  1. Months 1 and 2 — the syllabus

    Full coverage of the course content: ICD, CPT, HCPCS, anatomy, physiology and interview preparation. Nothing on the syllabus is skipped or left for self-study.

  2. Month 3 — mock tests

    A dedicated month of testing rather than a test at the end. You work through 8 to 10 mock tests so that the format, the timing and the pressure are all familiar before exam day.

What the syllabus covers

Six subjects, taught in full across the first two months:

  • ICD — diagnosis coding: turning what the provider documented into the correct diagnosis codes
  • CPT — the procedure and service code set used to report the work that was performed
  • HCPCS — the code set used for the items and services that fall outside CPT
  • Anatomy — the structures of the body, so that a clinical note reads as a picture and not a list of unfamiliar terms
  • Physiology — how those structures work, and therefore what the documentation is describing when something goes wrong
  • Interview Preparation — how to present your coding knowledge and reasoning to an employer

About the AAPC exam

The CPC exam belongs to AAPC, not to us. You register for it and pay for it with AAPC directly. The figures below describe that exam — they are not SMD Coding charges.

The exam, in two lines

  • AAPC exam fee — paid directly to AAPC INR 70,000 – 72,000, varying with the dollar rate
  • Exam pattern 100 marks · minimum 70 marks to pass

To be unmistakably clear: the INR 70,000 – 72,000 above is AAPC's examination fee. It is paid by you, directly to AAPC, and no part of it comes to SMD Coding. It is not what our training costs and it is not a figure quoted by us. Because it tracks the dollar rate, the exact amount changes.
